I had the opportunity to take photos of friends who wanted wintry Chicago portraits for the holidays. We wandered from Christkindlmarkt in Daley Plaza to the Bean, and despite my frozen camera difficulties, we had a pretty fun time and I particularly like the energy of these shots.

On Friday, March 19, 2010 from 7-11pm, Old Style proudly presents 50 ALDERMEN/50 ARTISTS at the Johalla Projects Gallery, 1561 N. Milwaukee.

"How many Chicagoans know what their alderman looks like? How many Chicagoans can tell you who their alderman is, and what he or she has been doing lately? We’re not pollsters, so we don’t have any hard data to provide answers to these questions — but we are artists, and we’re interested in using art as a vehicle in depicting and learning more about the aldermen who represent us at City Hall. To this end, we invite other Chicago artists to join us in producing 50 ALDERMEN/50 ARTISTS: A group exhibition of portraits that will enable people to learn more about the 50 aldermen who make up the Chicago City Council, and raise awareness of local government."

Why: This photo essay chronicles the action taken by the LGBT community in Chicago after the passing of Proposition 8 in California which re-banned gay marriage in that state. The change in California's state laws is a backward step in the struggle for civil rights. This decision not only nullifies that state's previous laws, but takes a stab at all Civil Rights legislation that has tried to ensure equal rights to all people in the United States. I hope that my images personalize this 21st century struggle for equality and serve as a testament to all people who have fought in the past and are currently fighting for their Civil Rights. It is time to join this movement and take action. Information will be provided at the show on who to contact to get involved in this struggle. The time is now.

I attended the Prop8 protest in Chicago. It was an amazing experience. We took over the streets in the loop and completely stopped traffic on Michigan Ave. Although the photos are not technical good/perfect (i.e. someone really needs to work on her settings...or everyone just needs to remain completely still while I'm photographing:) I think that they accurately evoke the mood of the event.

Ok, I finally gave up taking actual TTV photos with my Argus. This is totally photoshopped...and I've never actually used photoshop before (only lightroom for processing)! I've mixed feelings about the whole process...

Very exciting, yet unexpected news... I found out today that this photo was a finalist for the new Chicago map at Schmap Map. (www.schmap.com) And I got in! Well, a quick look at the site makes it appear that anyone who has taken a picture of something related to The Jazz Record Mart also got in.

I didn't even know there was a 'contest'...

Finally posting my mini cards from moo.com. (check out the link to the side->) I am very impressed with these guys, but the best thing is the mini card holder (pictured). There is something about the simplistically ingenious design and that makes it a pleasure to open each and every time! If you have the means, I highly recommend picking some up.

More bokeh! This was a ground view shot of the aftermath of the procession of the order of St. Rocca. It's something Catholic and we caught the insane amount of fireworks that they lit outside of St. Therese's in Chinatown. This is the aftermath.

Oooh...and my favorite thing is that it is much quicker than uploading using blogger and when someone (aka, the one person per day who visits) can access the flickr image if they click on the photo on the blog. And that is a much more manageable size photo. Hurrah!

Eminent Domain

I stumbled upon one of the most interesting photography exhibits I have seen at the NYC public library main branch: Eminent Domain: Contemporary Photography and the City. The exhibit explored the reorganization of urban space and its public and private use and how this reorganization threatens the daily lives of NYC residents. My favorites are Analogues by Zoe Leonard (very much my style and subject matter) and the subway photos of Ethan Levitas.

I experimented with a TTV technique today. I think the preliminary results are ok...it was more difficult than I imagined, but I did some research and hopefully will make some sort of contraption to connect my cameras to get rid of glare and excess light. This will hopefully make future attempts more clear; however, I love the old, slightly 'off' effect that I got here.
